His Holiness the Dalai Lama
On Saturday, April 25, the Blum Center for Developing Economies hosted a presentation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama who spoke on the theme of "Peace Through Compassion.”
The Dalai Lama delighted the audience with humorous personal anecdotes mixed with his keen wit and effervescent charm. He spoke on a variety of of topics ranging from Presidents to Buddhist teachings to current events and human rights. A crowd of more than 7,000 filled UC Berkeley's Hearst Greek Theatre and responded with a standing ovation upon the conclusion of the presentation.
According to UC Berkeley Public Affairs, the occasion marked the Dalai Lama's second appearance at the Greek Theatre and his third at UC Berkeley (he visited in 1994 and 1997). He was introduced by Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and actress Sharon Stone, a board member of the American Himalayan Foundation, which co-sponsored the event with the Blum Center.
Prior to the presentation Richard C. Blum was presented with the Berkeley Medal, UC Berkeley's highest award, in honor of his contributions to the campus and the university.
