Student Involvement
Blum Center: Contact Us!! [link]
Curriculum: A cornerstone of the Blum Center’s mission is to educate students about poverty alleviation and engage students (both graduate and undergraduate) in transformative experiences via in-country field work. To this end, the Blum Center has developed new courses and established a minor program that provides Berkeley students with the theoretical knowledge, methodological frameworks and practical skills necessary to effectively engage in the struggle against poverty.
Speakers & Events: The Center is in the process of organizing a distinguished speaker series that seeks to encourage awareness and debate around global poverty issues.
Service-Learning Opportunities: The Blum Center is committed to facilitating global service-learning opportunities for all students at UC Berkeley. Currently the Center is focused on researching and establishing partnerships with reputable organizations and projects that offer these types of transformative experiences.
Faculty Involvement
Blum Center: Contact Us!! [link]
Curriculum: The Blum Center is a cross-campus initiative that seeks to encourage and support education and research related to global efforts to alleviate poverty in developing countries. A multi-disciplinary committee of distinguished faculty members, whose teaching and research is focused on international development and poverty issues, is responsible for the design and oversight of the minor. Faculty members can also serve as advisors for students in the minor. To learn more about this program, contact Professor Ananya Roy, Blum Center Curriculum Director at ananya@berkeley.edu.
Guest Lectures: A faculty symposium series is currently in the planning stages for Spring 2008. The series is focused on lectures by organizations and foundations who are engaged in recent cutting-edge work on issues impacting poverty. This series will provide faculty with the opportunity to learn about innovative research projects, and expand their social networks in order to foster future cross-campus collaborations.
Initiative Funding (Call for Proposals): The centerpiece of the Blum Center’s poverty alleviation activities is a program of competitive awards to faculty and students designed to encourage action-oriented, innovative and entrepreneurial activities that contribute to the alleviation of global poverty. The Blum Center’s role is to stimulate, nurture and incubate innovative technologies, products, approaches, business models and systems. The objective is to identify and shepherd innovations to the point where adoption, scale-up and sustainability will be undertaken by entrepreneurs, NGOs, or other institutional partners. Request for proposals are issued on/about August of each year.
