Practice Experience: I volunteered with Suitcase Clinic, based locally in Berkeley. Suitcase Clinic is a volunteer-run student organization that operates three drop-in clinics offering health and social services to the homeless, with the goal of supporting the health and well-being of underserved populations in the local area. Specifically, I worked on developing health education materials and coordinating hygiene supply distribution at Youth Clinic (for 25 and younger) and currently work with clients one-on-one to refer them to resources in the Bay Area for dental exams, eye exams, medical care, legal services among others.

I'm a Bay Area local, spending most of my childhood in Castro Valley (next to Hayward). My interests are primarily in music education, nutrition education, food justice, and advocacy for the homeless. I'm from the College of Natural Resources, so I can give advice on how CNR resources and major classes can relate and supplement your GPP minor and also how to fit in multiple minors with your major. I'm in the peer advising office Wednesdays 1:30-4pm, so feel free to drop by anytime to say hello and chat. I look forward to meeting you! Lisa Chuong

Hi! I'm a 4th year at Cal and I had a wonderful experience working hands-on with physicians and nurses in China. After spending time observing various aspects of medical care in China, I plan on traveling more before I apply to medical school. Through the minor, I've gain more understanding on what it means to be a global citizen and how to engage in developmental work. I am here to help with any questions you may have about the GPP minor, balancing your busy schedules and life at Cal in general. I'm excited to hear any stories or suggestion you have about your Practice Experience and I hope all you will be satisfied with your experience as I was. Samantha Henstell

Hi! My name is Sam and I’m originally from Santa Monica, CA. In my spare time I enjoy playing the cello and piano, sampling amazing food around Berkeley, watching movies, and reading anything and everything from the New York Times to Vogue to Jeffrey Sachs. My main passion is public health, with an emphasis on global health. I’m especially interested in food justice, political ecology, aid, urban health, and city planning. Once I graduate, I plan on taking a year off and getting more field experience in public health before getting an MPH. Eventually, I’d like to work for an organization such as the CDC or the WHO. I have office hours on Monday afternoons, so if you ever have any questions regarding the minor, feel free to stop by! Jacquelyn Hoffman

Practice Experience: For my GPP Practice Experience, I worked through the Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) in their La Plata, Argentina site for 9 weeks this past summer. FSD placed me with a local community HIV/STI clinic, El Centro de Referencia de VIH/SIDA. I worked within this clinic each day by shadowing patient consultations and working on a photo-voice HPV campaign which was then distributed to 42 local health clinics in La Plata. This was the first HPV awareness campaign within the province of Buenos Aires that utilized photographs of patients.

Hi and welcome to the GPP Minor! My name is Jacquelyn Hoffman. Originally from Los Angeles, I have become a true NorCal gal throughout my four years here! I am a senior at Berkeley and study Gender and Women’s Studies. I will be applying to medical school with the goal to ultimately pursue high-risk maternal and fetal medicine, and am interested by the way feminist theory can influence medicine. I am particularly fascinated by reproductive technologies and women’s health issues. On the side of my classes, I am involved in the local food justice movement and am in the process of developing my non-profit named BareAbundance: Enough For All. This organization distributes excess consumable food to various vulnerable populations, with the hopes to empower all to have a stake in the food system. Between classes you can find me at Yoga to the People or drinking endless coffee at Café Strada! I can best help GPP students on topics related to my following interests: women’s empowerment/health, organizational building, and also networking on campus. I invite students to join me during my advising hours (Tu/Th 2-3:30 PM) and look forward to meeting you! Tuyen Nguyen

Hi there! I am a transfer student who originally came from Spain around five years ago. As an economics major, my main field of interest is the area of randomized control trials and the application of econometric tools to measure the impact of poverty reduction initiatives. If you are interested in this area definitely drop by the office and talk to me! I have been in North Africa and Kenya (and Tanzania for a short time) working for different NGOs. I am graduating this upcoming May and I am already beginning to look for opportunities to move on to after college, so I can give you tips on where to look for opportunities, what kind of opportunities are available, etc. In my case, I am trying to get an internship at UNDP this summer and then find a job position with either CEGA or IPA. Please feel free to drop by the office to talk about any questions you might have with regards to your minor (especially if you are a transfer), what kind of opportunities are out there if you are an economics major, what is like to live in Kenya or Sub-Saharan Africa in general, or any questions you might have. Movies, restaurants, public transportation – it’s fantastic! I had a wonderful time in New Delhi during my practice experience, so much so that I went back for a semester abroad last fall! I love talking about India, so if you have any plans to head there for a practice experience, please come and chat! I also love talking about the minor, so if you have any questions, or just want to gab, please stop by – I’m looking forward to meeting you!
