Shankar serves as the Dean of the College of Engineering and as Faculty Director of the Blum Center. He is professor of electrical engineering and computer science, bioengineering and mechanical engineering and has been on the Berkeley faculty since 1983.

Ananya Roy

Ananya Roy is Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley, where she teaches in the fields of urban studies and international development. She also serves as Education Director of the Blum Center and as co-Director of the Global Metropolitan Studies Center. From 2005 to 2009 Roy served as Associate Dean of International and Area Studies.

Maryanne serves as Executive Director of the Blum Center and also holds an appointment at Berkeley Law School. She has a JD from Catholic University, an MBA from George Washington University, and a BA from the College of the Holy Cross. She is a member of the California Bar.

Phillip serves as the Chief Administrative Officer of the Blum Center for Developing Economies, a position he assumed shortly after the Center was established in March 2006. Prior to joining the Center, he worked on political campaigns providing research and communications strategies for numerous candidates and organizations.

Alexis Bucknam

Alexis serves as the primary administrator and advisor for the Global Poverty & Practice Minor housed in the International and Area Studies Teaching Program. She also plays an integral role in developing and hosting other curricular activities of the Blum Center including a major speaker series and student symposium series. Bucknam comes to the Blum Center with a decade of experience in higher education with a particular focus on service-learning and student leadership. She earned a BS in Management from the University of Utah and MA in Education –Counseling in Student Affairs from UCLA.

Chetan serves as an Advisor for the Global Poverty & Practice Minor. Additionally, he coordinates workshops and events to support the success of students in the Minor. Prior to joining the Blum Center team, Chetan served as a Graduate Coordinator with the University of Maryland Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy Office. He holds a Master's degree in Counseling and Personnel Services from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Environmental Analysis & Design from UC Irvine.

Paula joined the Blum Center as an Events Specialist and also provides operational support to the Center's Faculty Director and Executive Director. In addition, she serves as Blum Hall Building and Safety Coordinator. Prior to joining the team, she worked in the Dean’s office of the College of Engineering. Paula received her BA from the University of Washington.

Poverty Scholarship Fellow
Emma Shaw Crane

Emma is a Poverty Scholarship Fellow at the Blum Center for Developing Economies. Prior to joining the Blum Center, she was a Fulbright Scholar with the Critical Medical Anthropology Group at the National University of Colombia in Bogot . She has an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley in Race, Gender and Political Economy, a minor in Global Poverty and Practice, and was a Student Teacher Poet in June Jordan's Poetry for the People. She wrote her undergraduate thesis on urban anti-gang injunctions and the criminalization of poverty in California.
