Meet the Inaugural Master of Development Engineering Cohort
Coming from the fields of finance, electrical engineering, nursing, and beyond, 45 students from around the U.S. and the world make up the inaugural cohort of the three-semester professional master’s program in development engineering, a transdisciplinary field founded at UC Berkeley that creates technology interventions in accordance with and for individuals living in low-resource settings.

New ‘Pipeline for Social Innovation’: Health Tech CoLab opens in Blum Hall 
Blum Center Research Director Dan Fletcher welcomed guests to the official launch of the Health Technologies Collaborative Laboratory, a brand-new campus makerspace designed to advance the development of medical devices to facilitate better healthcare and close the data and information gaps between innovators and industry.

Blackbook University Wins Big Ideas 2021 Grand Prize
The Big Ideas Contest awarded the 2021 Grand Prize to Blackbook University, led by Ibrahim Baldé (pictured at left with Big Ideas Director Phillip Denny) and designed to equip Black students with opportunities to help overcome institutional inequities. Hear the Blackbook U team discuss "Unpacking Entrepreneurship in Underrepresented Communities" at a Big Ideas event at 6 pm PT on November 2.

X-Force Fellows Team Up with Military to Solve Real-World Problems
The Berkeley X-Force Fellowship program, an initiative of the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) housed at the Blum Center, pairs the technical and entrepreneurial skills of students with Department of Defense organizations to address real-world military problems. “Some project sponsors would have hired their fellows on the spot if they could,” said one program manager.

Professor Dan Kammen to Serve in Biden Administration
Blum affiliated faculty member Dan Kammen has been selected to serve as senior adviser for energy, climate, and innovation for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Kammen, a leading expert in renewable energy science, technology, and policy, will primarily work with the agency’s PowerAfrica team to develop partnerships with African nations, with the goal of expanding access to sustainable power.
